What I need from you: a role and responsibility defining exercise

Why do this activity?

Titles often don't capture the breadth of activities and functions that team members perform.

This exercise helps us understand what we need from other team members of the team and what they need from us. Additionally, this activity helps us practice clearly and unambiguously articulate what we need from our teammates and respond to what others need from us.

Intro and ground rules (5 min)

Intro (2 mins)

Ground rules (2 mins)

WINFY activity (20 min)

First, fill in your β€œrole” in the table below.

Next, for each team member other than yourself, write down what you need from them. For example, I might write "Alex needs human-centered design resources from Elisa". Try to articulate as clearly as possible with as few words possible. Write down a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 needs for each team member. If you have a need no one is currently meeting, make a best guess at who could take it on. (10 min)

Each team member reviews what is needed from them and responds out loud with only "Yes", "No", or "Unclear." The facilitator or helper will copy that response into the relevant bucket. Remember – there is no discussion right now! You can only respond with β€œYes”, β€œNo” or β€œUnclear”. (10 min)
